But First... Pray

Prayer Before Studying Genesis

Heavenly Father,

Before I open Your Word, I want to quiet my heart before You. Thank You for giving us the book of Genesis—the beginning of Your story and the foundation of so much that follows throughout Scripture. Open my eyes to see You more clearly. Help me not to rush through familiar stories or assume I already know what they mean. Give me a teachable heart, wisdom to understand Your Word in its proper context, and discernment to recognize Your truth above my own assumptions.

As I study, reveal Your character, Your faithfulness, Your holiness, and Your incredible plan of redemption that begins on these very first pages. Show me how every chapter ultimately points me to Jesus.

Help me ask good questions, observe carefully, and delight in discovering the treasures You have placed within Your Word. Transform not only my knowledge but also my heart, so that I leave this study loving You more and trusting You more than when I began.

May this not simply be a study about ancient history, but an opportunity to know the Author of history personally. Guide my thoughts, guard my heart, and let Your Holy Spirit lead me into all truth.

In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Start Here

Before diving into Genesis, I encourage you to watch the BibleProject overview of the book. In just a few minutes, you'll gain a big-picture understanding of Genesis—its structure, major themes, historical setting, and how it fits into God's plan of redemption. Watching the overview first will help you read the book with greater confidence and recognize important connections as you work through your Bible Study Corner™ Guided Bible Companion.

Once you've finished the video, open your Bible, and begin reading Genesis. Then come back here to explore the companion resources, maps, timelines, and bonus study tools designed to help you dig even deeper into God's Word.

Begin Reading

Now that you've watched the overview, it's time to dive into God's Word. Before exploring the additional resources below, we are going to start reading the book of Genesis in your Bible. Resist the urge to rush ahead or rely on study notes. Spend time observing the text for yourself, asking questions, and noticing repeated themes, promises, and patterns.

Start by opening the free commentary linked below, or use a commentary of your choice. As you read, remember that Genesis is more than a collection of familiar stories. It is the foundation of the entire Bible, introducing God's character, humanity's need for a Savior, and the beginning of His redemptive plan that culminates in Jesus Christ.

I personally take notes from the commentary that I feel are important to remember.

Take your time, pray as you read, and allow Scripture to speak before turning to outside resources.
